Moving to St. Johns, Arizona

The Apache County seat โ€” what it's like to live there, the climate, jobs, schools, housing, and how to get around.

The quick facts

Q: What's St. Johns like?

St. Johns is the government and service hub for a huge, sparsely populated county. It's a quiet, friendly, affordable small town with deep roots โ€” first a Hispanic farming settlement, later home to Mormon pioneers โ€” and it still blends those traditions today. You get small-town life with more services than the tiny communities around it, plus wide-open high-desert country in every direction.

Q: What's the weather like?

It's a cold semi-arid high desert at about 5,700 feet. Winters are cold and dry with some snow; summers are hot but break for monsoon thunderstorms in July and August. The standout feature is the big day-to-night temperature swing โ€” a warm afternoon can drop to near freezing overnight. Skies are clear and the stars are spectacular.

Q: Are there jobs?

As the county seat, St. Johns has Apache County government offices, the school district, healthcare, and local business. The Coronado Generating Station power plant near town has long been one of the area's biggest employers. Many residents also ranch, run small businesses, work remotely, or commute within the region. Unemployment here has historically been low.

Q: What does housing cost?

Housing is one of the big draws โ€” median home values sit well below the Arizona average, and most residents own their homes. You'll also find affordable raw land nearby for building or off-grid living. If you're weighing a land purchase, read our buying-land guide first so you don't get a parcel that can't be built on.

Q: Schools and healthcare?

St. Johns Unified School District runs Coronado Elementary, St. Johns Middle School, and St. Johns High School, with a Northland Pioneer College center for higher ed. As the county seat, St. Johns also has the main local services, county offices, the public library, and medical care that the smaller surrounding communities drive into town for.

Q: What is there to do?

Outdoor recreation is the headline: Lyman Lake State Park for boating, fishing, and camping; the Petrified Forest National Park and Painted Desert about 45 minutes away; and the White Mountains and Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest within reach. In town there's the Apache County Historical Society Museum and several historic sites. Community life centers on events like the San Juan Fiesta, Pioneer Days, the Apache County Fair, and the Christmas light parade.

Q: How do you get around, and get things delivered?

This is rural Arizona, so a vehicle is essential and the nearest big-city airports (Phoenix, Albuquerque) are a few hours out. For day-to-day life, Concho Dash runs rides, food delivery, grocery and store runs (The Market, Dollar General, Ace, Carquest and more), and errands right here in St. Johns โ€” just text your order.
